Navigating Menopause:
From brain fog to passing UK Bar exams
(after rolling off hormone therapy)
I understand where you are right now…
In the chaos of life, before peri-menopause and menopause took hold, I felt on top of everything, finding ways to navigate most problems while burning the candle at both ends.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, peri-menopause hit me, literally turning my world upside down.
Stressed and distracted, I struggled to connect the dots between unrelated random, sometimes small, symptoms. In truth, each symptom was a signal I was entering a biological change, but overwhelmed, I missed all of those signs.
Exhausted, I carried on in a fog of uncertainty. Confused and worried.
On the verge of giving up my career, I urgently sought answers in a world of confusing advice from medical experts, OB-GYNs (five of them), internet searches, and literature. I found temporary relief from alternative healers through acupuncture, kinesiology, and hypnotherapy. Supplements helped, some more than others.
It was all trial and error in those early days. Yet, something inside me refused to give up, despite feeling desperate.
I felt deep inside that what the doctors were telling me could not be all there was – mother nature was not retiring me! I couldn't accept that, at around 50, mother nature was ‘throwing me away’ just because I could no longer produce hormones or create new life.
Feeling despondent and exhausted, I turned to hormone replacement therapy (HRT). I was told this was the only way to regain my sanity. Despite worrying about the risks (I come from a high-risk family background), I started on hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
I now understand what desperation for relief feels like.
HRT provided temporary relief, a ledge to grab onto while climbing to the top – to find myself again.
I went on HRT, yet became more determined to seek an alternative approach. Driven by my family's health history concerns, I started to educate myself, researching and reading extensively about peri-menopause, menopause, and related topics, including the brain, gut, body systems, mindfulness, movement, sleep, stress, lifestyle, and toxic load.
Add to this, years of my own trial and error, going on and off hormone replacement therapy, nutrition, fasting, exercise and meditation, as well as deeper research into, for example, the power of vitamin D (which is also a hormone!).
All while maintaining a career in business, albeit not always gracefully at times.
I also embarked on further education, earning formal qualifications in functional wellness, lab testing, and refreshing my Master's training in psychology and Graduate Diploma training in counselling. I have developed a passion for empowering women journeying through peri-menopause and menopause using a holistic approach, grounded in experience and experiment on myself to find my answers to my menopause.
Empowerment motto for my menopause clients: Educate. Question. Decide. Lead.
Putting this motto into practice, my biggest self education was to have undertaken my UK legal Bar training, a lifelong dream since I was 16 years old, while rolling off HRT before I started the training.
As part of my menopause research, I became particularly drawn to the concept of "brain rewiring," so I decided to test this research firsthand – that there's life beyond brain fog and forgetfulness without HRT – I became my own experiment.
I experimented with myself, studying and passing UK Bar exams without hormone replacement. HRT did not rule my life. I cannot tell you how that realisation felt for my sense of control and independence!
I also have a deep interest in the role of stress, sleep, and movement in maintaining vitality during the transition to menopause. Each piece of the puzzle helped me achieve balance without HRT.
The role of nutrition and its impact on hormone signalling is central to any strategy for dealing with menopause. Hormones are our communicators, and there are more of them than you might think. It's essential to understand the key hormone players in our body as we journey toward and through peri-menopause and menopause.
Through this journey, I'm here to tell you that menopause isn't the end; it's simply a transition.
You don't have to endure it alone. You don't need to set your sights lower just because of this transition.
I know peri-menopause confusion and frustration firsthand – the fear and feelings of loss of control that come with this. I have been there, and I can help you find your path to wellness, likely with less frustration and exhaustion than I endured.
Whether you're considering hormone replacement therapy, seeking natural remedies, or navigating the confusing path of menopause, I'm here to help you.
My evidence-based approach isn't about quick fixes; it's about sustainable solutions and comprehensive wellness.
So, if this sounds like you, let's embark on this journey together.
I will support you in uncovering the keys to your well-being, navigating the challenges of menopause with resilience and courage, while you take the lead in deciding all aspects.
Life isn't over just because of peri-menopause and menopause.
It's simply a new chapter waiting to be written.
PS: I don't regret going on hormone therapy, but I had a nagging doubt that never left me, eventually leading me to search for alternatives.
This whole peri-menopause and menopause experience brought home to me the amount of misinformation and fear surrounding menopause options.
Based on my own experiences, I understand the importance of listening and developing thoughtful solutions that fit individual and unique needs.
This takes time and should not be rushed.
So, above all, I listen first. Then we move on to robust processes, lab testing, and thorough 'root cause' analysis, where I partner with you all the way.
You as the lead, and me in support.
Life isn't over just because of peri-menopause and menopause.
It's simply a new chapter, waiting to be written.
